Clinical study: Lower back pain and sleep disturbances are reduced through massage therapy.

Research:
This study examined massage therapy versus relaxation therapy in patients with chronic low back pain. Among other things, the reduction in pain, depression, anxiety and sleep disorders, the improvement in trunk mobility (ROM) and possible effects on work absences and productivity were assessed.

A total of 30 adults who had suffered from back pain for at least six months took part. On the first and last day of the five-week study, the participants filled out questionnaires and were checked for their range of exercise.

Results:
At the end of the study, the massage therapy group compared to the relaxation group showed:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Lower levels of depression and anxiety
  • Less sleep disturbances
  • Improved trunk mobility and flexion
